The Missouri Mavericks survived a determined comeback attempt by Rapid City on the way to a 3-2 win.
Missouri made the score 3-1 on a goal by Dave Pszenyczny at 11:19 in the second period, and Rapid City got as close as 3-2 when Mike Vaskivuo scored 10:07 into the third period.
Pszenyczny had two goals to lead the Mavericks to victory.
Missouri relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Cole Ruwe, Kris Hogg and Ed McGrane took 11 of the team's 21 shots. The Mavericks' defensemen played well offensively, producing two goals while racking up nine shots.
Missouri additionally got points from Sebastien Thinel, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Missouri came via Brad Good, Patrick Schafer, and John-Scott Dickson, who each chipped in one.
Rapid City put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Missouri to score on any of its three power plays. Rapid City was below its usual level of shot production, taking 20 shots compared to the 25 Rapid City averages.
Rapid City got a goal from Collin Circelli as well. Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Riley Weselowski, Kelly Czuy, Shawn Limpright, and Michael Couch, who contributed one each.
Charlie Effinger recorded 18 saves for the Mavericks. Missouri ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Rapid City's starting goalie, Danny Battochio, made 10 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Tim Boron, who stopped eight shots. Rapid City totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
